On Sept. 5, 1901 he and his wife were attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York when he was shot by as assassin waiting in line to shake his hand. John H. Roberts and his wife Martha settled in Fox River, Wisconsin, before 1878. They had at least one daughter, Mary ("Mamie"), born around 1871. Mamie Roberts married Henry C. Behrens (b. 1865) of Saint Paul, Minnesota, and they had one daughter, Ruth. Behrens owned a lumber and coal company with offices in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota.
